PRELIM: Discovering continuity editing

THE BRIEF:
Preliminary exercise: Continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on actionshot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.

WHAT I LEARNED:

  • shot lists make everything easier
  • tell actors who aren't in the shot to shut up or to go somewhere else
  • to not use shots with a small difference (2 steps minimum)
  • as a director need to give clear instructions
  • using shadows to advantage (shadow on my face in video)
  • using manual focus
  • doing 'rushes'
